Should I ever try selling my coins to pawn shops?

Generally speaking, pawn shops are among the worst places to sell your coin collection. Since many pawn shop associates lack advanced knowledge of coin values, they skew toward extremely conservative valuations and then make an offer based on that low assessed value. We tested out a handful of local pawn shops and averaged offers of 20-40% of our coin collection's value.

What's the best way to sell my coin collection?

As a rule of thumb, visiting a local coin shop or trustworthy collector to ask questions is a good start. The more you know about the value of your coins, the better prepared you are to make an informed sale. Next...the more work you put into selling...the more you will sell your coins for. Remember! Nobody can force you to sell your coins.

How do I avoid getting swindled in a deal?

The best way to avoid being swindled is to find help. Most well-established coin shops are actually a good place to start, because they wouldn't last very long if they were in the business of swindling people. It's always a good idea to find help from family or friends just to assist in the process of a purchase or sale.

How can I find the value of my coin collection?

A reputable coin shop can give you a relatively quick estimated value. If you would like to do research at home, we recommend purchasing the most recent "Guide Book of United States Coins" or the most recent issue of the "Currency Market Review" by GreySheet.

Should I ever clean my coins?

NEVER clean your coins! Cleaning can dramatically reduce the value of a collectable coin!

What is the best way to liquidate a coin collection as part of an estate?

Many local coin shops and dealers can provide a formal appraisal if a verbal estimate won't do. These services may come with a charge, with many costing $60-$120-per-hour depending on the specificity and depth of the appraisal. Many coin shops can also provide an offer for the estate collection (assuming all appropriate documentation is provided).

For Collecting Coins:

Why collect coins?

Coins and rare metals typically appreciate in value and hold their value exceptionally well. They are small, affordable at all budgets and relatively easy to preserve. Fine metals (unlike stocks) have never been worth $0.00!

What are some quick tips for starting a collection?

  • Start simple and small.
  • Collect what you like.
  • Handle coins carefully and store them properly.
  • It's not a race! Be patient for a good deal.
  • "Buy the value book before you buy the coin."
  • Join a local coin club.
  • Visit a coin show or a local coin shop.
  • Have a plan.
